Benefits of Cervical Support Collars

2" Cervical Collar
Cervical support collars have been around for many years, as a matter of fact, there is proof of them being used in ancient Greece and Egypt. For a medical device to have been around for that long it proves that it is indeed, useful.

These support collars are used to immobilize the head and neck, relieving neck pain and allowing the muscles and joints to relax and heal. There are several types of cervical support collars available on the market and which one you use is dependent on the type of injury and the severity of your neck pain. Collars can vary between a soft foam wrap around collar, a hard plastic collar with padding on it, or even an inflatable collar that's size is adjustable. Your medical professional will tell you which is best in your situation.

According to statistics, over a million cases of whiplash are reported annually, most occurring from automobile accidents. Whiplash and the neck pain associated with it are often treated by using cervical support. Neck injuries can be serious and can lead to long lasting problems if not dealt with properly and promptly after injury.

Cervical support allows the weight of your head to rest somewhere other than your neck. When you are suffering from pain due to a neck injury, even the simple act of sitting up hurts. Cervical support collars can assist with this pain, while giving the soft tissue in your neck time to heal from the injury. Also, occasionally, when a person is injured in an accident, a cervical collar is used temporarily while any neck injury or lack thereof is determined.

If you are wearing a cervical collar it is recommended that the collar be tight enough that you are unable to move your head and neck, but you are able to comfortably breathe. Additionally, the lower part of the collar should rest comfortably against your chest, not tight enough to cause irritation. As with any medical device, keep the skin underneath the collar clean and dry and clean the collar regularly.

It is imperative to remember to take proper care of your collar, but it is equally important to remember that in order for healing to occur, the collar must be worn according to your medical provider's instructions. This is to ensure that you receive the maximum healing benefit out of your support collar
